Psalm 119  NIV (with other text notes added for clarity)

‘ Aleph

1 [a] Blessed are they whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the LORD.

1BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, to be envied) are the undefiled (the upright, truly sincere, and blameless) in the way [of the revealed will of God], who walk (order their conduct and conversation) in the law of the Lord (the whole of God’s revealed will).

The  Free Dictionary

  • “Blessed”  favorite definition:  “enjoying the bliss of heaven”.

Adj. 1. blameless – free of guilt; not subject to blame; “has lived a blameless life”; “of irreproachable character”; “an unimpeachable reputation”

inculpable, irreproachable, unimpeachable

clean-handed, guiltless, innocent – free from evil or guilt; “an innocent child”;

2 Blessed (then:  feeling the joy of heaven) are they who keep his statutes (with child-like innocence, doing their best)
and seek him with all their heart.

 3 They do nothing wrong (again, blameless indicated;  doing the best of one’s ability in child-like innocence, not perfection, but sincerity of heart);
       they walk in his ways.

4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed (as a child would obey a parent with full trust).

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast (showing the soft heart of a child to obey, knowing perfection is impossible)
       in obeying your decrees!

6 Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.

7 I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.

 8 I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me (David’s heart to keep God’s favor; we are forgiven and do not have to worry about God’s spirit leaving us New Testament).

9 How can a young man keep his way pure?  (How can I live a holy life, pleasing to God, my Father?)
By living according to your word.  (By living according to truth, the word, making it my focus and standard for living).

10 I seek you with all my heart; (Do I?  With my time, priorities, decisions, thinking?)
do not let me stray from your commands.  (Full dependance on God…I cannot do it myself!!!)

11 I have hidden your word in my heart (THIS is my part!)
that I might not sin against you. (Because his word protects me when I follow it).

12 Praise be to you, O LORD;  (I praise him for giving me His word!  For God’s word is CHRIST HIMSELF!)
teach me your decrees. (I focus, He teaches).

13 With my lips I recount (Importance of speaking and remembering out loud God’s word).
all the laws that come from your mouth. (What God speaks is important.  His WORD is who he is!)

14 I rejoice in following your statutes (Obedience brings joy!  Not sorrow and regret!)
as one rejoices in great riches. (I mean…JOY!!!)

15 I meditate on your precepts (think long and hard and often on His ways, know them)
and consider your ways.  (His ways and thoughts are higher than ours, the word says).

16 I delight in your decrees; (His instructions for my life, his guidance, and clear hand and involvement in my life gives me the greatest joy man can know…to know God is walking close to me, helping, keeping my life firm and steady.)
I will not neglect your word. (Even the Psalmist had to speak to himself on this matter and make strong commitments).

g Gimel

17 Do good to your servant, and I will live; (I am dependant on God’s goodness to LIVE!  Really live!)
I will obey your word. (I WILL OBEY YOUR WORD.  WRITE 100 TIMES. :D)

18 Open my eyes that I may see (I depend on God enlightening me so that I may see where I am blind).
wonderful things in your law. (rules are not to oppress me, but to free me to truly live!!!)

19 I am a stranger on earth; (Heaven in my real home)
do not hide your commands from me. (Make the way plain, Lord, as you promised you would!)

20 My soul is consumed with longing
for your laws at all times. (This is often the longing we try to fill with other temporary things.  God’s law is in Christ fulfilled.  I can imagine how the law was to them as Christ is to us!)

21 You rebuke the arrogant, who are cursed
and who stray from your commands. (God takes care of those who do not listen…he teaches us all).

22 Remove from me scorn and contempt,
for I keep your statutes. (David know he would be ridiculed by some for following God whole-heartedly, just as we will be).

23 Though rulers sit together and slander me,
your servant will meditate on your decrees.   (”Do not be moved”.)

24 Your statutes are my delight;  (This is where JOY is!)
they are my counselors. (This is where HELP is!)

d Daleth

25 I am laid low in the dust; (emotion comes)
preserve my life according to your word. (his word relieves)

26 I recounted my ways and you answered me; (self examination and his comforting presence and instruction go together)
teach me your decrees.   (God will show us, help us how to walk in the right path)

27 Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; (God will reveal truth to me)
then I will meditate on your wonders. (He will give me delightful food for thought)

28 My soul is weary with sorrow;  (sorrow comes, deep soul-ful sorrow)
strengthen me according to your word.   (but his word strengthens my inner man)

29 Keep me from deceitful ways; (Prayer for help to keep from being trapped)
be gracious to me through your law. (The best thing we can ask for from God is for his grace and instruction to be near, and to seek it…GRACE and TRUTH).

30 I have chosen the way of truth;  (It is my choice)
I have set my heart on your laws. (It is my commitment)

31 I hold fast to your statutes, O LORD; (it is my discipline)
do not let me be put to shame. (It is HIS protection!)

32 I run in the path of your commands, (It is my exercise and direction)
for you have set my heart free. (BECAUSE I AM FREED!)

h He

33 Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees;  (TEACH ME TO FOLLOW!)
then I will keep them to the end. (I WILL OBEY!)

34 Give me understanding, and I will keep your law (GIVE ME UNDERSTANDING, LORD!)
and obey it with all my heart. (I WILL OBEY WITH ALL MY HEART!)

35 Direct me in the path of your commands, (DIRECT ME!)
for there I find delight. (MY DELIGHT!)

36 Turn my heart toward your statutes (TURN MY HEART TOWARD YOUR WORD!)
and not toward selfish gain. (NOT TOWARD MYSELF!!!)

37 Turn my eyes away from worthless things; (TURN MY EYES FROM WORTHLESS THINGS!)
preserve my life according to your word. [b] (PRESERVE MY LIFE WHERE I HAVE WASTED IT!)

38 Fulfill your promise to your servant, (KEEP YOUR PROMISES, LORD!)
so that you may be feared.  (FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR GLORY AND FAME!!!!!!)

39 Take away the disgrace I dread, (as every child prays when they dread correction)
for your laws are good. (just as a parent’s love is good, but sometimes hard).

40 How I long for your precepts!  (Again, longing for God’s ways, knowing they are best, and they are HIM; LIFE!).
Preserve my life in your righteousness. (Safety comes in making my life, His life.)

w Waw

41 May your unfailing love come to me, O LORD, (UNFAILING LOVE, what we all long for…found in him alone.)
your salvation according to your promise; (thank you, Lord!)

42 then I will answer the one who taunts me, (answering the evil one on the basis of Christ’s salvation for me alone.  I am free.)
for I trust in your word.  (God’s word keeps our minds safe from Satan’s accusations and lies.)

43 Do not snatch the word of truth from my mouth, (Satan can cause us to begin to speak un-truths).
for I have put my hope in your laws. (But, our hope is in remembering God’s word).

44 I will always obey your law, (I will obey your ways, Lord).
for ever and ever. (OT, obeying the “law” is today our obeying the voice of the Holy Spoirit, and the directions of scripture for our lives).

45 I will walk about in freedom,  (YES!)
for I have sought out your precepts.   (Seeking God’s directions takes the weight off of us!)

46 I will speak of your statutes before kings (Fill us with boldness, Lord!)
and will not be put to shame, (let us speak your truth wherever we go!  Not holding back!)

47 for I delight in your commands (because that is where our joy resides…knowing you…your ways).
because I love them. (LOVING GOD’S WORD IS LOVING GOD HIMSELF!)

48 I lift up my hands to [c] your commands, which I love,  (Surrender to the word by signal of hands open before God, like my dog…she will relax and surrender in obedience and rest with those whose authority she respects and trusts.
She is hyper around everyone else.  That is us!)

and I meditate on your decrees.  (concentrated time thinking about God’s will and ways for each step of my day…help me, Lord!)

z Zayin

49 Remember your word to your servant,
for you have given me hope. (We ask God to remember his promises to us in scripture, and he will always uphold it, like a court of law when they are reminded of a former precedent or law).

50 My comfort in my suffering is this: (WE WILL SUFFER!)
Your promise preserves my life. (HIS PROMISE/PRESENCE GIVE HOPE!)

(note to self:  resume PM)

51 The arrogant mock me without restraint,
but I do not turn from your law.  (resolve needed in the face of fire)

52 I remember your ancient laws, O LORD,
and I find comfort in them.  (we find comfort in standards and absolutes)

53 Indignation grips me because of the wicked,
who have forsaken your law.  (hurt by things that hurt God)

54 Your decrees are the theme of my song
wherever I lodge.  (standards do not change by location)

55 In the night I remember your name, O LORD,  (meditation)
and I will keep your law.

56 This has been my practice:  (Not perfection, but habits of obedience)
       I obey your precepts.

x Heth

57 You are my portion, O LORD;  (my “amount”, my “serving”, my “filling”)
I have promised to obey your words.  (resolve, commit, choose)

58 I have sought your face with all my heart;  (your face=your character=your presence…all my heart)
be gracious to me according to your promise.  (God promises to meet us when we seek with all our heart)

59 I have considered my ways  (reflection, conviction)
and have turned my steps to your statutes.  (repentance)

60 I will hasten and not delay  (RIGHT NOW!  OBEDIENCE)
       to obey your commands.

61 Though the wicked bind me with ropes,
I will not forget your law.  (Ex:  Daniel)

62 At midnight I rise to give you thanks  (when we wake…praise!  Pray!)
       for your righteous laws.

63 I am a friend to all who fear you,  (community)
to all who follow your precepts.

64 The earth is filled with your love, O LORD;  (YES!)
       teach me your decrees.

X Teth

65 Do good to your servant (”do good” to us, O Lord!  :D)
according to your word, O LORD.

66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment,  (Teach me!)
for I believe in your commands.

67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,  (Role of afflication to correct us:  “thy rod and they staff, they comfort me” Ps.23)
but now I obey your word.

68 You are good, and what you do is good;  (AMEN!)
       teach me your decrees.

69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies,  (It happens)
I keep your precepts with all my heart.

70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling,  (It happens)
but I delight in your law.

71 It was good for me to be afflicted (Role of affliction/suffering…if we draw close to God’s ways)
so that I might learn your decrees.

72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me
than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.  (value/priority…”where your treasure is”…)

y Yodh

73 Your hands made me and formed me;  (GOD MADE AND FORMED US!)
give me understanding to learn your commands.  (Pray for understanding)

74 May those who fear you rejoice when they see me,  (Be a reason for praise!)
for I have put my hope in your word.  (Hope, not in circumstances, but in God’s word!)

75 I know, O LORD, that your laws are righteous,
and in faithfulness you have afflicted me.  (God sometimes “afflicts” us in  His faithfulness!)

76 May your unfailing love be my comfort,  (comfort of his love, even in those time)
according to your promise to your servant.

77 Let your compassion come to me that I may live,  (we are dependant on his concern for us)
for your law is my delight.

 78 May the arrogant be put to shame for wronging me without cause;
but I will meditate on your precepts.  (Med. on HIM!  NOT on the wrongs done to us!

79 May those who fear you turn to me,
those who understand your statutes.  (favor with God AND man)

80 May my heart be blameless toward your decrees,
that I may not be put to shame.

k Kaph

81 My soul faints with longing for your salvation,  (desiring deliverance only from God–no shortcuts)
but I have put my hope in your word.

82 My eyes fail, looking for your promise;  (waiting to the point of emotional/physical fatigue)
I say, “When will you comfort me?”  (feeling doubt, yet trusting)

83 Though I am like a wineskin in the smoke,  (see: this link for a great explanation of “wineskin in the smoke”)
I do not forget your decrees.  (Even in the midst of feeling “washed up”, he was commited to pursuing God, but needed to remind himself over and over of that choice, as seen here.)

84 How long must your servant wait?  (WAIT–doubt?)
When will you punish my persecutors?  (Will you vindicate?  Waiting.  Questioning.)

85 The arrogant dig pitfalls for me,  (HELLO!)
contrary to your law.  (Reminding God of his promises).

86 All your commands are trustworthy;  (Reminding himself that God can be trusted).
help me, for men persecute me without cause.  (Back to the facts.)

87 They almost wiped me from the earth,  (More facts…”they are killing me here”)
but I have not forsaken your precepts.  (”let me remind you that I’m sticking with you!)

88 Preserve my life according to your love,  (God’s character and name is one of love…He WILL love us)
and I will obey the statutes of your mouth.

l Lamedh

89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal;  (What lasts)
it stands firm in the heavens.  (What is the standard for all time).

 90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations;
you established the earth, and it endures.  (What God makes, he can hold together).

91 Your laws endure to this day,
for all things serve you.  (ALL THINGS SERVE YOU!)

 92 If your law had not been my delight,  {Today, your ways…your commands, your instructions}
       I would have perished in my affliction.  {God’s steadfastness is an anchor in stormy seas.}

93 I will never forget your precepts,  (God’s word is etched on our hearts in hard times)
for by them you have preserved my life.  (because he bails us OUT with it)

94 Save me, for I am yours;  (Dedication, surrender)
I have sought out your precepts.

95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me,  (ahem…”I’m still for you!  Don’t forget about me!”)
but I will ponder your statutes.

 96 To all perfection I see a limit;
but your commands are boundless.  (The supremacy of God’s word to all things)

m Mem

97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.  (Training the mind to obey).

98 Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,  (The “edge”)
for they are ever with me.

99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.  (Prayers for wisdom granted, but mind work needed)

100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.  (Obedience here brought understanding…not the other way around!)

101 I have kept my feet from every evil path  (obedience begets obedience)
so that I might obey your word.

102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.

103 How sweet are your words to my taste,  (Relishing in God’s every word)
sweeter than honey to my mouth!

104 I gain understanding from your precepts;  (God’s ways save us from death,  ungodly paths lead there).
therefore I hate every wrong path.

n Nun

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet  (God word makes the path for us plain!)
and a light for my path.

106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it,
that I will follow your righteous laws.

107 I have suffered much;  (The facts.)
preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word.  (The plea.)

108 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth,  (The worship.)

I have put my hope in your word.  (HOPE…in your word, what is trustworthy, proven, unchangeable)

115 Away from me, you evildoers,  (Fleeing from sin)
that I may keep the commands of my God!  (so that he is not influenced to go the wrong way)

 116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live;
do not let my hopes be dashed
.

I will always have regard for your decrees.

118 You reject all who stray from your decrees,
for their deceitfulness is in vain.

 119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;
       therefore I love your statutes.

I stand in awe of your laws. (AWE OF YOUR WAYS)
